APhA Counseling Competition

To all Pharmacy Students,

The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) is hosting the Patient Counseling Competition on campus Tuesday and Thursday of next week. All pharmacy students in P3 through P5 are welcome to participate. You need only to be a current APhA member.

This competition will be based on how well you can counsel a patient in a specific scenario. The consultation will be videotaped and you have a maximum of 5 minutes to counsel a patient. Information resources on the medication will be provided prior to the counseling session.

You will be graded on your knowledge of medicine as well as your communication skills. The competition will be on Tuesday 2/17 and Thursday 2/19. Sign up sheets will be in the pharmacy building on Patrick Campbell 's door. Although this is starting on Tuesday, our first day back, students can still sign up at the last minute, if needed.

The counseling will take place in the APhA office located in the sub basement of the pharmacy building. The winner of the competition will compete on a national level at the APhA national meeting that takes place in San Antonio , TX , from April 3rd through 6th. The winner receives an all-expense paid FREE trip!

Even if you are a P3 and do not have the same knowledge as a P5 student, you could win with good communication skills. It is a good experience and you will be able to see your strengths and flaws in counseling a patient. I urge all of you to make an appointment to enhance your communication skills as well as an opportunity to win a free trip.

Thank you,

Jonathan Horvath

Albany Day on March 31st

To all Pharmacy Students,

Lobby Day in Albany is set for Tuesday, March 31st. For this annual event, pharmacy students, pharmacists, and state pharmacy leaders from all over New York converge on Albany to lobby state legislators and educate them about important bills that strengthen our profession and help the citizens of New York.

Beginning next week, we will have a table outside HS 107 to sign up for a seat on the bus. Reservations are $10 and are refundable to all who attend. Students who do not go to Albany will not receive a refund.

Our preparation for Lobby Day begins with a Dean’s Hour Program on Monday, March 2 at 11 a.m. in HS 107. Dr. Henry Cohen will discuss the importance of finally passing CDTM (Collaborative Drug Therapy Management) and what it means for NYS and for you as future practitioners. At this time 45 other states have already passed CDTM legislation. Attendance is mandatory for those who wish to attend lobby day.

We are looking for student group leaders as well. Please contact me at the sign up table next week or email Patrick Campbell at Patrick.Campbell@liu.edu and leave your cell phone and email address.

Student leaders will take groups of up to 15 students and a faculty member to meet with up to four legislators or their staff that day.

The buses leave at 6:15 a.m. outside the DeKalb Avenue Campus gate and we return to Brooklyn by 6:30 p.m. Students are expected to dress professionally and bring white coats if you have one.

Early sign up begins on Tuesday, February 17th between 11:00 and 12:00 outside HS 107.

If you have any questions you can email me at pharmelliott@yahoo.com

I hope to see you at the sign up table.

PRESIDENT STEINBERG HAS ASKED THAT THIS INFORMATION BE SHARED WITH OUR STUDENTS. THIS IS A LETTER HE RECEIVED FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE NYS HIGHER EDUCATION SERVICES CORP:

Last week, I had the opportunity to address the Legislative FiscalCommittees about Governor Paterson's proposed New York Higher EducationLoan Program (NYHELPs).

This initiative will help New York State students and their families fillthe gap between college costs and State and federal aid by providing accessto low-cost education loans not currently available to New Yorkers in theprivate loan market.

Our NYHELPs fact sheet highlights the program's benefits to students, families and all New Yorkers, and tells supporters how to help make thisprogram a reality.http://www.hesc.com/content.nsf/SFC/New_York_Higher_Education_Loan_Program_NYHELPs/$file/NYHELPsFactSheet20090116.pdf

I ask that you share it with your students, faculty and staff and ask themto contact their legislators to support NYHELPs.

Additional resources are available on HESC.org, including links to contactstate lawmakers to tell them to enact NYHELPs.http://www.hesc.com/content.nsf/SFC/New_York_Higher_Education_Loan_Program_NYHELPs

There is also a NYHELPs page on Facebook which should appeal to yourstudents.

Thank you for supporting NYHELPs and helping New York students achievetheir dream of attending college.
