APhA Counseling Competition

To all Pharmacy Students,

The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) is hosting the Patient Counseling Competition on campus Tuesday and Thursday of next week. All pharmacy students in P3 through P5 are welcome to participate. You need only to be a current APhA member.

This competition will be based on how well you can counsel a patient in a specific scenario. The consultation will be videotaped and you have a maximum of 5 minutes to counsel a patient. Information resources on the medication will be provided prior to the counseling session.

You will be graded on your knowledge of medicine as well as your communication skills. The competition will be on Tuesday 2/17 and Thursday 2/19. Sign up sheets will be in the pharmacy building on Patrick Campbell 's door. Although this is starting on Tuesday, our first day back, students can still sign up at the last minute, if needed.

The counseling will take place in the APhA office located in the sub basement of the pharmacy building. The winner of the competition will compete on a national level at the APhA national meeting that takes place in San Antonio , TX , from April 3rd through 6th. The winner receives an all-expense paid FREE trip!

Even if you are a P3 and do not have the same knowledge as a P5 student, you could win with good communication skills. It is a good experience and you will be able to see your strengths and flaws in counseling a patient. I urge all of you to make an appointment to enhance your communication skills as well as an opportunity to win a free trip.

Thank you,
